Deafest/Dunkelheit/Split Album/2008 CD Review

Deafest are a band that my readers should be familiar with right now, Dunkelheit are also a band from Colorado with a more cold and depressive take on black metal, and this is is a review of their self released 2008 split album, and we will start out with Deafest.

Drum programming ranges from slow, mid paced to fast beats, while the bass playing is mixed down low in the mix and seems to follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast raw black metal riffs with the softer playing having an ambient feel to it that is very dark, while the lead guitar are very primitive sounding ambient black metal guitar leads mixed in with a doomy edge with not much in the way of solos.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams while the lyrics touch on nature orientated themes, as for the production it has a very dark and raw feel to it.

Now we will review Dunkelheit which also happens to be a one man project.

Drums are mostly mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats being used at times , while the bass playing has a very dark tone which is mixed down low in the mix and seems to follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars are mostly mid paced to fast black metal riffs , and there are no guitar solos or leads present on their side of the split.

Vocals are all high pitched black metal screams, while the lyrics cover despair, cold and solitude, as for the production it has a very dark and raw feel to it.

In my opinion this is a good split and Deafest have the best songs on this split. RECOMMENDED TRACK  from Deafest "Embedded" and Dunkelheit "In Shadows". RECOMMENDED BUY.
