Sinlust Interview

Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?
We have been receiving really positive reviews from Archaic Triad and Terra Relicta so far. We will promote Sea Black at a release Party on May 12 in Brest, FR. We will also be playing live at Hellfest Off on June 14. The song “Sea Conquerors” will be aired on French “La Grosse Radio” on April 21 as a preview. The song “Stream Attraction” features on Imperative Music Compilation XIII distributed worldwide through Nuclear Blast, Season of Mist and Earrache Records.

How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
The production is modern and massive. It's not raw or ear-fatigue like. We love black metal bands with a modern but aggressive sound like Abbath, Arkona (PL) or Batushka. Gwen Kerjan at Slab Sound Studio has done a really great job!

This is the first album to be released since 2011, can you tell us a little bit more about? What has been going on during that time span?
We haven't toured a lot yet, we have focused on writing and recording new material. We have put a lot of effort into that record and we are thrilled about the result.

What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?
The lyrics relates a story, it's a concept album. The story is based upon our singer Firefrost's dark Fantasy novel Noire Mer. Here is the pitch:
A cataclysm has devastated the island kingdom of Isulgaar.
Forty-four years later, the north of the island thrives thanks to its new king orchestrating the alliance between locals and exiles, while the South is being rebuilt after the investiture of former looters. Between them, the center of the island has been developing through peat harvesting.
While mysterious navigators with obscure motives dock in the South, a diabolical plot is brewing in a northern coastal seigneury. But neither the North nor the South suspects that the black sea visions of the king son could reveal the future of Isulgaar ... or rather its disappearance.

What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sinlust'?
Back in 2008, the band name was very close to have been “Death Lust” but our first singer at that time wasn't so happy as “Death” was used in many band names. We wanted it to revolve around some dark sombre attraction that seduces you, that pulls you back. We wanted our music to be a potpourri of all our dark inspiration that would reflect our dark side so we went for Sinlust which means the lust of sin basically! The power of dark thoughts that will corrupt your soul, the temptation of evil that will always be part of the human condition. It reveals every human's weakness. But that weakness which is every human being's burden is turned into strength through music.

What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We've done a lot of great shows but the one we specifically remember is a private show at  Möhrkvlth's HQ, a Black Metal band of friends of ours a few years ago. The sound was really  good and the crowd was amazing. Our stage performance is powerful and technically solid.  We have come to master long epic progressive songs that put out both a lot of energy and  tight precision of playing. We  work hard to make powerful and accomplished shows.

Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
We will be playing at Sea Black's release party in our hometown Brest, FR on May 12 and at Hellfest Off in Clisson, FR on June 14. From there we'll tour as much as we can in 2017, mainly in France.

On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
So far, reactions to Sea Black have all been extremely positive, stating its originality and novel riff ideas as well as its sincere Black Metal roots. I think both the reviews so far (Terra Relicta and Archaid Triad) have pointed to the “completeness” of it.
We have'nt had comments about having guest Tax Station's Gaëtan Fagot sing two clean parts (on Trilateral Conflict and on Sea of Tress). The fact that each of our albums comes with a Dark Fantasy novel written by our singer Firefrost, the concept album side of it, have been appreciated. Our first album “Snow Black” led to “Noire Neige” (“Snow Black” in French) novel, while our second album “Sea Black” led to “Noire Mer” (“Sea Black” in French) novel. Both novel are 400 page book published by a French publishing house, Nats Editions.

Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?
Our singer's one-man-band Black Metal project is called “Firefrost”. He's released the album “Inner Paradox” in 2016. Our drummer Infernh is currently “Strakelin”'s drummer (Metal). Our guitarist Chris in Lust and Infernh are working on a 3-song EP with “Silent Dawn”'s drummer Nuts on vocals, likely to be called “Phaeton Rain Scenario” (Melodic Heavy Black).

Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
We will continue to affirm our style which is Epic Black Metal with a lot of powerful heavy melodic melancholic riffs and dark ambiances and a hint of viking-like vibes.

What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
We are fans of Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Immortal and Satyricon. We also love Anorexia Nervosa and Dimmu Borgir symphonic work, as well as Moonsorrow and Angatyr epic music. We think Anaal Nathrakh are amazing. Recently we've discovered ass-kicking Batushka. We also listen to classical music.

What are some of your non musical interests?
Singer Firefrost is a mechanical engineer who is also fond of working out, as well as a dark Fantasy novelist, as you would have understood. Guitarist Chris in Lust is into Victorian England and Sherlock Holmes and a dedicated English teacher. Bass player Rain Wolf is an independent brewer and movie enthusiast. Drummer Infernh is a photography aficionado.
